There’s No Good Reason Not To See a Dentist

Taking care of your teeth is something that is important for a number of reasons, but it also is something many people neglect to do. Among adults, about one-third have failed to visit a family dentist in the past year. And of the other two-thirds, a significant proportion have gone only once, even though two visits a year is recommended. Here are some of the reasons why people avoid going to a dental office.

One of the biggest motivators that keeps people out of their local dental clinic is fear. Many people associate dental care with pain, either because of stories they have heard or because of a bad experience with a poorly trained dentist. While it’s true that there may be some pain associated with teeth cleaning, a good dentist and good assistant will be able to minimize that pain. And a little pain from a checkup and cleaning is a lot better than major pain associated with a cavity or more serious tooth problem. The fear can also extend to worries that something is seriously wrong. However, it makes no sense to put off treating a potential problem because of fear. Delaying dealing with it will only allow it to get worse.

Another reason people avoid their family dentist is the cost. Though dental insurance is fairly cheap, many people don’t have it, with it estimated that for every one person without health insurance, there are three without dental insurance. If dental insurance is offered by your employer, it is worth it. Most dental insurance will completely cover two cleanings a year, and it offers lesser coverage for other services. Even if you don’t have dental insurance, care can still be affordable. Some dental offices offer free introductory cleanings to new patients. If you live in a larger city, there may be free dental services offered to those who can’t afford them, either through a community clinic or a university dental school clinic.

It’s not hard to find a top dentist that can take good care of your teeth and mouth. And there is no good reason not to go to the dentist. Taking care of your teeth is important to your overall health, as tooth and gum disease can lead to other more serious health problems. Do your body a favor and go see a dentist at least once a year.
